Top Breastfeeding Tips for New Moms

Just relax: the most vital piece of advice breastfeeding veterans have for a new mom. That’s probably easier said than done for them. But what other advice could a “newbie”follow for breastfeeding effectiveness?

August 1-7 is World Breastfeeding week, a global week of education and advice for breastfeeding women. You’d think breastfeeding is the most natural thing ever, but there are still a lot of variables. Sharing information and participating in breastfeeding support groups can shed light on many of its mysteries.

The Mayo Clinic gives traditional pieces of advice, while Baby Center is a place where veterans share victories and opportunities for growth. Some of Mayo Clinic’s recommendations are:

  • Ask for help right away
  • Let your baby set the pace
  • Hold off on a pacifier
  • Gauge your success
  • Take care of your nipples
  • Make healthy lifestyle choices
  • Give it time

Two things Mayo Clinic mentions is don’t smoke and be cautious with medications. Just as with pregnancy, obedience to these items during breastfeeding is equally important.

One veteran from Baby Center highlights the “relax”mentality. She emphasizes that this is a learning opportunity for you and your bundle of joy. A lot of moms experience bleeding and cracking when breastfeeding, and would be tempted to quit. Another veteran of the site says don’t give up. She used lanolin ointment on her nipples faithfully and never experienced any cracking or bleeding.

Aside from its top 10 breastfeeding tips, Mama Natural has great videos that help you learn the ropes. Genevieve, Mama Natural’s host, made a video of her five personal tips for breastfeeding, http://youtu.be/S0svswDJIPs.
