Understanding the Hepatitis B Vaccine

Across news and social media, there is a lot of conversation about childhood immunizations right now. Our mission at Rainbow Pediatrics is to ensure you feel confident and informed about your child’s care. This month, we’re breaking down the Hepatitis B vaccine: what it is, why it’s recommended, and how it protects your little one’s future.

What is Hepatitis B?

Hepatitis B is a highly contagious virus that attacks the liver. It is primarily spread through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids. While we often think of “liver disease” as an adult issue, the virus is particularly dangerous for infants; if a baby is exposed, they have a 90% chance of developing a chronic, lifelong infection. This can eventually lead to serious complications like cirrhosis or liver cancer later in life. A sad reality is that 25 percent of babies who get chronic hepatitis B die.

Why is the Hep B vaccine given within 24 hours of birth?

You might wonder why a newborn needs a vaccine so soon. Here is the reason: Most people with Hepatitis B don’t actually know they have it. If a mother has Hepatitis B (even unknowingly) when she delivers, the baby is at immediate risk during birth. Administering the vaccine within the first 24 hours serves as a safety net, providing the earliest possible protection against a virus that is much easier to prevent than to treat.

Common Misconceptions: How is Hepatitis spread?

A common myth is that Hepatitis B is only a sexually transmitted virus. In reality, it is spread through contact with infected blood or bodily fluids in several ways:

  • During Birth: Transmission from mother to baby during delivery.
  • Household Items: Sharing items that might have trace amounts of blood, like toothbrushes or razors.
  • Skin Contact: Coming into contact with open sores, saliva, or blood from an infected person.
  • Medical/Cosmetic Tools: Contact with blood on sharp objects, such as needles used in unsterile tattoo or piercing environments.
  • Sexual Contact: Having an infected partner later in life.
